Common Questions:
At what age can my child start piano lessons?
- The earliest I allow is age 5. The main reasons for this age are: their hands are now big enough to play the instrument & they are able to sit and focus for the full 30 minutes that is required for a proper lesson.
- I also teach adults!
How often should lessons occur?
- Once a week
What will my child be learning?
- How to play the piano by…
- learning proper hand and body placement.
- learning how to recognize different notes, rests, dynamics and other musical symbols.
- learning how to play with feeling as well as technical correctness.
- learning different styles of music; Jazz, classical, popular, & music from different countries.
- learning how to practice properly.
- learning how to write their own music.
- having FUN!
What will be expected from my child in regards to practicing, homework and performances/recitals?
- In regards to practicing: It depends on the students ability.
- I typically ask my beginning students to practice 15 minutes a day (5 days a week). This will allow enough time for the student to play through/practice each piece (approx 5 times). This will allow them to progress at a steady pace through their books.
- More advanced students are expected to practice 30 minutes a day (at least 5 days a week). This will allow enough time for the student to practice/polish each piece and work out all the problem areas that need attention and to be prepared to perform at their next lesson.
- I have 2 recitals a year in which my students are required to perform.
What Method do you teach?
- I use the Faber Method. I find that my students are appropriately challenged and engaged while learning real pieces written by well known composers such as: Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, etc….
- There are 3 main books that I use: Lesson, Theory, and Performance. There are other books that I use if needed. They are: Technique & Artistry, Popular Repertoire, and Christmas Books.
